There are 3 different ways to attack in the game evony.
1) Archer Trade Fire - This is achieved when your ranged units trade fire with the defending ranged units.
2) Phract Smack - This is achieved when you clear the layers with your ranged units then finish the defending archers with your cavalry and cataphracts.
3) Mech Attacks - Mech waves can be used for clearing layers and for trading fire with the defending ranged units.
1) Archer Trade Fire
This method is usually my preferred method as I spend most of my time building archers anyways. This is also the method you have to use against more skilled players usually because in my honest opinion only and idiot would let someone clear out their archers with cavalry and cataphracts.
Let’s assume you are attacking someone with:
5,000,000 Warriors
1,000,000 Pikes
1,000,000 Swords
1,500,000 Archers
To effectively attack this city you should use archer trade fire.
The Steps to Achieving Archer Trade Fire:
1) Clear Traps / 3000 Warriors, 300 Pikes, 300 Swords, 300 Archers, 500 Cavalry
2) Clear Abatis / 500 Cavalry+500 Scouts
3) Clear Archer Towers / 100k Naked Archer Waves
4) Send Trade Fire Waves / 99.5k Archers+500 Cavalry
It is most effective if you send 7 trap/abatis clearing waves followed by 3 trade fire waves.
2) Phract Smack
This method is best used against people that are offline or do not know well enough to keep proper layers in their cities. With this method you clear all the layers and walls and send in Cavalry+Cataphracts to kill the defending archrs.
Let’s assume your attacking someone with:
500k Warriors
100k Pikes
100k Swords
1,500,000 Archers
This is also a pretty well defended city. Although you would never catch me with such thin layers.
The Steps to Achieving Cavalry vs. Archers
1) Clear Traps / 1000 Warriors, 100 Pikes, 100 Swords, 100 Archers, 50 Cavalry
2) Clear Abatis / 500 Cavalry+500 Scouts
3) Clear Archer Towers / 100k Naked Archer Waves
4) Send Waves of 30k Cavalry+70k Cataphracts (Ranged units may also be added for extra rounds)
This method is a little more forgiving in that if they do not have enough archers to kill your Cavalry before they are in range to attack the archers they can kill a small amount of layers or wall defenses.
3) Attack With Mech Units
I don’t want to get in to mech attacks too deep but there are a few things you should remember.
1) Ballista/Catapults are to be used against a 5200 Defense.
2) Rams are to be used against a Compact Defense.
